Lectric Beach Hosts Annual 'Tan For Hunger' Drive
Inspired by television broadcasts pleading for help in restocking local food pantries, Lectric Beach Tanning Club decided to host its annual “Tan For Hunger” drive a bit early this year. Over a four-day period in April, Lectric Beach invited clients and the general public to donate wholesome, healthy, non-perishable food items to the Hunger Task Force of southeastern Wisconsin. The four metro Milwaukee-area Lectric Beach salons competed to see which could “outweigh” the others in pounds of food collected. According to salon manager and drive organizer Teresa Gonzalez, local food pantries were especially in need of juice boxes, peanut butter, baby food and cereal. The call for donations went out to more than 6,000 previous and current Lectric Beach tanners via a mass e-mail just a few days prior to the event. Guests who donated five or more non-perishable items received a free tanning session or complimentary upgrade. In addition, those who donated the most items were eligible to win premium bottles of Designer Skin lotion. Lectric Beach Tanning Club also placed monetary donation jars at all four locations for tanners who wanted to contribute, but were unable or simply forgot to bring in food items for the collection. “We wanted to make it simple and give everyone a chance to be part of the fight against hunger,” Gonzalez says. The “Tan For Hunger” drive has been a community service performed by Lectric Beach Tanning Club many times over the past 21 years, and each season, thousands of pounds of food are collected.
