GMS Sponsors Miss Indoor Tanning Contest
Clearwater, Fla.-based Gulf Management Systems (GMS) is sponsoring its first Miss Indoor Tanning contest this May. The contest will be held at Banbu, an exclusive new nightclub and WFLZ-FM 93.3 will broadcast live from the event. Proceeds will benefit Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg—a middle school that changes underprivileged kids’ lives with its innovative curriculum. On Friday, May 2, contestants will compete for prizes, including a weekend stay at an upscale hotel, dinner for four, a professional photo shoot, a $100 jewelry shopping spree and more. Employees and customers of local tanning salons must pre-register by Friday, April 18 to participate in the contest. The general public can sign up at Banbu on the night of the event. Contestants must be female, at least 18 years of age, and should come dressed to impress in a little white dress. Event attendees can vote for their favorite model by giving her dollar bills from 11:30 p.m. until midnight. The contestant with the most money at the end of the voting period will be crowned Miss Indoor Tanning. Representatives from Mercantile Bank and Florida Capital Bank will be present to validate winners and all voting proceeds will benefit Academy Prep. “The school’s track record speaks for itself,” says Charles Billone, president of GMS, adding that the company has sponsored two students at Academy Prep. “We can’t think of a better way to give back than to give these kids a quality education and the opportunity to make a difference. This contest is a fun way to get the local community involved and let more people know about Academy Prep’s outstanding efforts.” Other contest sponsors include Decision HR, Jamie Jackson Photography, Tastings, Bernies & Son, A & C Air, Massage Envy and Devoted Creations. “We want to play our part in helping to transform our community,” says Domenic D’Angelo, owner of Banbu. “To achieve this, we’ve decided to support Academy Prep by donating a percentage of our door cover charge and sales for the evening of the tanning contest. The future of our community is in the hands of our youth, and we believe Academy Prep’s mission to transform young individuals into positive, productive members of society is an honorable goal.” Academy Prep is a non-profit, private middle school funded entirely through community contributions. Located in the midst of some of the toughest inner city neighborhoods, Academy Prep provides a four-year, tuition-free college preparatory education to kids who qualify for need-based scholarships. While fewer than one-third of their neighborhood peers finish high school, 95 percent of Academy Prep’s graduates have gone on to high school or college, or have begun fulfilling careers.
