How To Attend Your Office Party (While Maintaining Your Reputation)

Attending an office holiday party? Don't check your professional reputation along with your coat. You should have fun, but be careful about having too good a time. Follow these tips and you'll be able to return to the office with your head held high.

Don'ts:

1. Don't Drink Too Much: Alcohol lowers inhibitions and can diminish the quality of your judgment-making skills, which is way consuming excessive libations is closely related to many other "don'ts".

2. Don't Declare Love For A Co-Worker: Even if you're sincere, it will be assumed you're drunk.

3. Don't Tell Your Boss What You Really Think (Unless Positive): He/she isn't likely to take it in stride just because it's a festive time of year.

4. Don't Photocopy Yourself: This type of behavior is perceived as childish to many, and passé to the rest.

5. Don't Treat the Office Party Like a Singles Bar: You may see another side of your co-workers, however, you shouldn't try to get to know any of them too well. Workplace romances or one-night stands can be disastrous. Also see tips #1 and #2.

Do's:

1. Do Seek Out Others: This is a good time to meet with co-workers you know and like, and get to know others with whom you work less closely. If you're not the mingling type, find someone who looks as miserable as you feel and speak to them. You'll both enjoy the evening more.

2. Do Avoid Salty And Greasy Foods: Such foods often trigger the desire to drink excess amounts of alcohol. Instead, nibble on foods high in starch and protein to help slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream.

4. Do Keep Your Glass In Your Left Hand: Follow this tip so that when you shake hands with someone it won't be wet or cold.

In conclusion, whether the dress code is jeans or formal dress-up clothes, the office holiday party can be an opportunity to share festive feelings and network internally to better understand your company's operations, which can translate into quicker raises and promotions. Or, it can be a minefield, and you don't want to jump in feet first. So think about preparing for your next party as you would an important client meeting. And leave the lucky mistletoe at home.
